Being well-prepared and timely equate to a good and successful exhibit opening that would ensure a long-lasting good impression among visitors. Synesthesia somehow almost didn’t pull that one off during its first night out last November 28.
The exhibit took up to the task of bringing music and art to new heights, enhancing our senses to a whole new experience. Its theme is pretty much seen in many of the works featured here at Synesthesia‘s venue in Secret Fresh Gallery at the Ronac Art Center in Greenhills, San Juan.
A pair of exhibitors (and sometimes a single one) out of the over-all 18 graduating students taking part are assigned a featured musician/band performing throughout the entire two-night duration of the event. Their produced artwork should reflect/express a musical guests’ image and musicality. My favorite part would have to be the “artist’s musical profile program” set up in the middle of the venue. Instead of a keyboard and mouse, the laptop containing the program is connected through some unusual computer parts such as a glass of water, an egg, a cup of ketchup, and a potassium-rich banana.
And since we’re talking about musical guests here, I was able to see at least one of them perform: Extrapolation, a jazz band that you might have seen performing every once in a while in the streets (and when I mean “streets”, I mean Bonifacio High Street).
As a fan of the genre, these guys certainly have promise if they continue to do what they do. Hopefully, beyond having their original tracks played on Crossover and Radio High, they might have a chance to do a duet with some established jazz artists like David Benoit, Kenny G, Renee Olstead and of course my all-time fave, Dave Koz.
There are quite a few more that followed but I wasn’t able to stay long enough to watch them all.
Of course, every good comes the bad. As much as I like the exhibit over-all, I just wished they were able to get things running ahead of time. Holding off visitors a bit longer than expected is a big exhibit no-no. I understand if there are delays in getting some things off the ground but this could have all been avoided if they were brought in and quality-checked well in advance.
Synesthesia over-all, took a risk in making theirs distinctly apart from every other MMA Portfolio exhibit out and got away with it with a few yet significant flaws when they weren’t able to start opening night on time. But the musical guests who graced the night, and the impressive works of several artists have more than make up for it.
