A Right Kind of Something for Once

Sometimes, good things never last but are never forgotten. But in the case of DWKX’s latest incarnation, 103.5 Wow FM†, it is better left hanged out to dry and say good riddance to it completely. That’s how I felt upon learning the station is going to undergo rapid changes in a matter of at least a week. The Max FM listener in me is jumping in joy.

Flashback to Monday, popular masa radio jock left Wow to return to his old stomping grounds (well not really) at 106.7 Energy FM. Wow’s Facebook page (which is no longer active as of July 20), released an updated schedule of its DJ line-up. Obviously a lot of the originals have left and there’s two strangely empty slots in the afternoon and evening, which I kinda find it strange.

Someone pointed out at PinoyExchange that Wow’s days may be numbered and it didn’t take long to realize that the station have bit the dust the following Tuesday. I for one am glad that Wow ended the way that it did. To think that The Great Masa Experiment was supposed to bring a total turn-around and bring that much needed lifeline to make the station profitable for the powers that be. I wonder how it all went wrong that it had to let Mr. Fu (who resigned but may have seen the signs) and the rest of its DJ’s go (save for a good few or so I heard). Hmmm….

Sidenote: At least no one’s scolding me on this one.

But no matter, what’s important is that the next chapter is going to be a brand new start for DWKX. From the many sources I have gathered, I learned that an old Manila radio classic is set to return in the form of K-Lite: Manila’s Lite Alternative a.k.a. The Right Kind of Lite.

Manila's Right Kind of Lite.

Manila’s Right Kind of Lite.

K-Lite is one of those radio stations that always ring a bell for the frequent and irregular radio listener because of its name alone. You can count me as one of those people. As I was more of a WRR listener during my grade school/high school years, I never knew of its awesomeness until after it folded up and tribute blog entries and forum threads popped up to honor the late great station. I always wonder why they call it K-Lite although I do know it was originally set up to compete against lite rock champ 96.3 WRocK.

How the station will fair this time at an age where ten other masa stations have all but eradicated the Manila radio landscape is yet to be seen. Thanks to whatever remains as decent and varied stations, there’s still hope to turn things around for the better. K-Lite will certainly give a much needed boost in bringing back the variety in Manila radio. Sources say that jocks confirmed to join the new K-Lite ranges from Max Fm vet Mondo Castro (a.k.a. Johnny Chase), old K-Lite’s legacy jock Carl de Guzman (known to Max listeners as Carl McFly), and a radio newbie in the form of a colleague of mine from my The Farm days in 99.5RT (I let you guys find out who he is para surprise).
