The CSB Experience 2: “Take Time to Read: Help Iggy Villanueva fight against Leukemia”

I wanna share to you this post from the CSB section of Pinoy Exchange.com:

You might not know him, but might somehow; you already bumped or saw him around the campus. Even I don’t know him personally; just recently I just knew he was once my classmate in my NATSC13 class back in my frosh days, which I infrequently noticed him because he is usually to be found together with his co-athletes at the backside of the classroom. Iggy Villanueva(ID 107) is a full academic scholar, an athlete, and a graduate of University of St. La Salle-Bacolod in his secondary school, He was diagnosed last January 6, 2009 with an ACUTE MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA. Just in little ways, if you’re interested to donate blood just proceed to SAO-3rd floor Solomon, and help in the fund raising campaigns allotted for Iggy, purchase any t-shirt merchandises, ballers, that can be found in this site “iggy’s friends”

A letter from iggy’s mom

26 January 2009

OUR DEAREST FRIENDS…

I am so embarrassed to do this yet, I am humbling myself to ask…please read on…

January 6, 2009 was the worst day of my family’s life…our eldest son, IAN GABRIEL PICART VILLANUEVA, was initially diagnosed to have ACUTE MYELOGENOUS LEUKEMIA. It is already the 20th of January, and after a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion from different doctors, the diagnosis, sadly is still the same: ACUTE MYOLOGEOUS LEUKEMIA. To aggravate things even, he even has pneumonia. Thus, chemotherapy cannot start just yet. Untreated, he just has 4 months to live…

Treatment plan for Iggy includes at least 3 rounds of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant! To date, we have already moved from 3 hospitals. Currently we are at National Kidney & Transplant Institute to save on cost.

Though we may belong to a middle income family, the medical expenses that have and are to be incurred is so staggering! The amount needed is about 5 Million …thinking of how many zeroes the figure has makes me want to give up…But I know I wont and I cant! I will do anything or everything to save my son to the best that I could. Sad but true, I have nothing…Whatever is left of our meager savings has all been used up. Time is essential. The bone marrow transplant will be performed 2-3 weeks from now, and I need funds to deposit before any treatment can be done.

I am literally alone…Its just Iggy & myself in the hospital. Friends & relatives come to visit but I cannot compel them to do more. I am a one woman army. Thank God that I have the laptop and my mind as a weapon…

Iggy, is a well rounded individual who I can say is an achiever. From grade school to college he is very athletic: red belter in taekwondo, track & field and basketball. An honor student from pre-school to college, a leader in his own ways.

As a mother, it breaks my heart that such potential should go into waste…He is so young…IT IS MY MOST FERVENT PRAYER THAT YOU BECOME PART OF THE CYCLE OF HEALING…IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE. I HOPE I AM NOT ASKING TOO MUCH. HUMBLY I AM ASKING ANY HELP THAT YOU CAN EXTEND MY FAMILY. WHATEVER MEANS WOULD BE MOST WELCOME. I may not be able to repay your kindness and generosity in this lifetime…but I am confident that God knows…

I am realistic enough to understand how difficult life is today. I am not asking for total dole-out. If at all, any of you are willing to loan me…I would forever be grateful. I promise to pay, although little by little, with interest even. Please…This is already a desperate cry for help… I just cant imagine what is to be…

May I also request continued PRAYERS THAT IGGY NOT GIVE UP, HOLD ON AND BE STEADFAST IN HIS WILL TO LIVE. Likewise, prayers THANKING FATHER GOD FOR THE HEALING.

Thank you very much for taking time out to read this letter. I know in my heart that you will be able to help me and my family one way or the other. May the Good Lord always bless you and your loved ones.

Respectfully,

VIVIEN ‘BENG’VILLANUEVA

My Own Movie Franchise About Evil Nuns

This one came floating around my head for years already, out of the boredom in the middle of a dozy Calculus class back in high school. It’s a set of films about evil nuns which I wanna produce when I become a bigtime filmmaker known for making hit low-budget but critically-acclaimed movies.

Although, there’s already existing films that goes by that same concept, mine’s different. It’s a 30-film franchise and every installment is titled after some popular films, but tweaked to suit the mood of the movies, fitting for the “evil nun” concept. This is all for fun 🙂

The franchise’s slogan is: “Pray Again…”

  1. Evil Nun I: The Sorcerer’s Nun
  2. Evil Nun II: The Fellowship of the Nuns
  3. Evil Nun III: The Dead Nun’s Chest
  4. Evil Nun IV: Army of Nuns
  5. Evil Nun V: The Final Battle
  6. Evil Nun VI: The Two Nuns
  7. Evil Nun VII: A Tale of Two Nuns
  8. Evil Nun VIII: Nuns of Prey
  9. Evil Nun IX: The Brady Nuns
  10. Evil Nun X: Nuns vs Jason
  11. Evil Nun XI: NUNneriffic!
  12. Evil Nun XII: Nun Wars
  13. Evil Nun XIII: War of the Nuns
  14. Evil Nun XIV: Are We There Yet?
  15. Evil Nun XV: The Prisoner of Azkaban
  16. Evil Nun XVI: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Nun
  17. Evil Nun XVII: Sister Sister
  18. Evil Nun XVIII: Sister Act
  19. Evil Nun XIX: Brothers&Sisters
  20. Evil Nun XX: You and Me Against the Nuns
  21. Evil Nun XXI: Diary of the Nuns
  22. Evil Nun XXII: Dawn of the Nuns
  23. Evil Nun XXIII: Land of the Nuns
  24. Evil Nun XXIV: Night of the Living Nuns
  25. Evil Nun XXV: Step It Up!
  26. Evil Nun XXVI: Nunbusters
  27. Evil Nun XXVII: One Nun Only
  28. Evil Nun XXVIII: Dreamnuns
  29. Evil Nun XXIX: Clash of the Nuns
  30. Evil Nun XXX: Ode to Joy/The Last Stand

The CSB Experience 2: Tripodiamus

A late late entry but I’m gonna write about it anyway:

For week 3 of Fotogra, Ms. Ofrasio gave us an introduction to the wonder tool that is the tripod. I forgot which brand it was but the units currently available at the 10th floor SDA are plenty in sight.

At first try it was a bit difficult. I have to remove this certain piece and have it attach to the camera’s bottom and later attach the whole thing onto the tripod. I also have to constantly adjust the “legs”  not only because I have to use it to obvious purposes but also because I have to bring it wherever place I want to take my pics with.

However, I didn’t maximize the tripod the first time I used it, thus when my CP#2 came out, I noticed that some of the pics taken (with aperture set between f/22-f/16 and shutter speed is below 1/60 per second) are blurry. That’s when I decided to use the tripod for most of my newer set of pictures for CP#3.

Getting into my creative side last Saturday, I took pics (this time, the aperture is set between f/2.8-f/1.8) that are extremely out of the ordinary thus it became less frequent to just hold the FM3a (even if shutter speeds of 1/125 per sec allows me to do so) and more on using the tripod. I’m hoping that this time, the quality of pictures would turn out good, despite “re”-shooting 24 pictures using a Konica film (which I know will turn out bad, unlike my usual use of YKL/Fujicolor film rolls).

What made me happy right now is that a family friend gave me as a present this really neat 2nd-hand Sony remote-controlled tripod. It’s essentially a tripod but, it is has RC capabilities that are compatible only with Sony cams when used.

Nevertheless, I was inspired to do this sort of photography trick that one of my friends would do when bored :):).

The CSB Experience 2: Mukhang….Frosh?

I was eating lunch last Saturday with some buds and one of them was utterly surprised to see a senior we all know and love. I looked around but can’t who was he referring to. I looked around a second time, and my jaw dropped. When I saw him, he looks like a….frosh?

“Wow! Anong ginawa mo?”

Ngumiti lang si senpai at dumiretso sa mesa niya dala ang pananghalian niya.

The CSB Experience 2: A Model for a Day

After Fotogra class, I continued on with my photoshoot for shallow depth of field at the 11th floor SDA when two guys approached me. They asked if I’m interested on being a model for their photoshoot for a magazine. Since, I have all the time to do my other stuff fo C-Break, I gave it a go.

We went to the SDA Parking Area where the first thing they did was to have me sit on a balck cartolina laid out on the floor (Note: Mezzanine Floor). They said that if I have my own I-Pod, I could have them worn by me and pretend to be emo-like (which I did).

I couldn’t get into the emotion thus I thought of playing a very sad song in my I-Pod playlist: Sting’s “Shape of My Heart”. It worked and I was feeling emo all the way of the first shoot. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that they also brought along another student they invited to be a part of this.

Afterwards, it’s back to the 11th floor we go. Right next to my Fotogra classroom (A1106)  is another one, although a bigger one and multi-purpose as a photography studio. When it wa my turn for the shoot, they made me sit on this chair with lights placed on my left and on my right. Thet flash when the camera the guys were using had its shuter-release button pressed. They took a lot of shots of me doing very emotionally-expressive poses (on the face!).

Then when it’s all said and done, I got a good look on their shots of me and was pretty amazed, and speechless. The execution of the pictures were artistically well-done. I was even speechless on what I looked like on these pictures. Every single pic taken on me showed lots of expressions of torment, sadness, torture, and depression.

I actually can’t wait for them to be published, just hoping I could get my hands on that magazine of theirs here on school.

Ang saya!

The CSB Experience 2: A Photographer’s First Rolling Mistake

Wagghhh! I made a mistake! I’m sorry but it’s all too late! (Wait, parang nag-rhyme bigla?).

For today’s Fotogra, we were to exercise shallow depth of field (Aperture f/2.8 to f/1.8) and as well as recording data via bracketing. I was almost doing fine until sometime past noon. I finished all 24 rolls of film using my borrowed Nikon FM3a (not “FM3” as previously thought).

But when I was about to have the film roll “de-roll” using the film rewind knob, I forgot the simplest thing: push that metal button found below he cam so that whatever’s holding the film could release it. Releasing it would help me rewind the film back into its crypt.

Unfortunately, forgotting that little detail came out disastrous effects: the film was pulled out of its container instead of the container pulling it in.And because it is out, it’d be difficult to put it back without exposing the film. In short, I was screwed. No choice but to have the entire film exposed in order to get it out from the FM3a.

One good news, I could still borrow the FM3a on Saturday right before my 9am class on that day. But i would also mean, missing the finale episode of my wide-followed telenovela on Studio 23. Waghh!

The CSB Experience 2: A SHRIM-pymazing Race

Isa sa kanila ang sumigaw “OVER THERE!!” tapos bigla sabay nagsitakbuhan patungong Solomon Hall. Buti naka-iwas ako sa stampede nila.

Weird 😀

The CSB Experience 2: A Rough Draft I Made for An 8-Week NSTP Program

I wanna share to you guys a rough draft I made for my NSTP2. It’s for an 8-week immersion in Baseco Compound in Tondo, Manila wherein we’re going to teach kids ages 6-14, 3 hours per week. So far I managed to finish 2 weeks worth out of the required eight week plan. It’s not yet final since I’m still brainstorming for more ideas. Suggestions are warmly welcome. 😀

I. Week 1
a. Activity-Getting to Know Each Other (Objectives written below)

b. Preparatory Tasks (Before the Activity)
c. Division of Tasks *In case of unexpected developments, one of us would fill in for someone not available.
i. Documentarian (2)
ii. In-charge of Food and refreshments (2)
iii. Orientors (4)
d. Materials Needed
i. Cartolina
ii. Pentel Pen (permanent)
iii. Whiteboard marker/Chalk
iv. Manila Paper
e. Budget Allocated
i. Php 800 (Estimate)
f. Expected Output
i. Not only do the students got to know us better and that a sense of closeness was establish earlier on, we expect that the students have their total trust on us and thus returning for another session the following week.

II. Week 2
a. Activity 2-Introduction to Writing
i. Considering that we are teaching kids whose ages ranged from 6 to 14, it will be hard for younger kids to cope up to the lessons being taught to them compared to those who are older.
ii. It might be okay for us to teach them basic phonics to the younger kids while having older ones help us as aids. This would help them value the essence of group unity, coordination and cooperation.
iii. But in the case that many are already capable of writing and reading, we’re going to have a writing activity wherein we let the students write essays and have them read before the entire class.
b. Preparatory Tasks
i. Prepare small notebooks/writing pads, pencils, erasers and other necessary writing materials.
ii. We will also implement a “rewards” system to help encourage students on doing their essays. They’ll be given a “reward” for having their essays read aloud before the class. These “rewards” are candies and chocolates.
c. Division of Tasks
i. Teacher
ii. In-charge of Foods and Drinks
iii. In-charge of Candies and Sweets (to be used for activity)
iv. Documentarian
v. Teacher’s Aide
d. Materials Needed
i. Notebook/Writing Pads
ii. Pencils (Sharpened)
iii. Sharpeners (Two-three)
e. Budget Allocated
i. Php800 (Estimate)
1. To be used for buying of writing materials, foods and drinks (sandwich and zesto).
f. Expected Output
i. It is expected that they will be able to develop not only their writing skills but also their self-esteem as well. Self-esteem is needed to fully express a person’s feelings through writing
