When She Left Me Part 1

Lauro Jose D. Macalajoc was a very bright 16-year old boy with a very bright future. He was accepted in a prestigious college, he is the class valedictorian, not only that he won awards ranging from spelling bees to sports fests trophies.

It was during their high school graduation did he met the girl that would change his life forever. She is Marla Karylle P. Rejas, a top student who boast both beauty and brains. He made the worst decision in his life of asking her to be his girlfriend at the eve of their graduation. Little did he know that that mistake will soon have its consequences.

Lauro, or Larry to his friends and family, gave the biggest surprise to his family. Right in the middle of his first year in college did he told them that something happened between him and his girlfriend Marla. He told them that she’s pregnant and that he’s the father. This little piece of news shocked the family and asked why they did it and why they did it on such an early age.

And this where our story begins.

A little after 5 years, Larry is now a general manager on a car company in EDSA. He earned this after he sold ten of their models to clients in a record of just two months. Higher job means higher salary, he thought.

He said to himself that his family would be glad by this piece of good news. He came home that night and told to his two kids, Yuichi and Karla, and they congratulated him with kisses and hugs. Then, eager to tell his wife, Larry asked the kids where their mom is. She went out to buy groceries, they said. Disappointed that she wouldn’t be able to know about his promotion, Larry decided to prepare dinner for the while family so that Marla wouldn’t have to do it. Besides, he is in a good mood after being promoted.

Around six thirty in the evening, Marla came home with a bag full of groceries. She was surprised to see her husband home very early and had dinner made for her. She asked if there was a special occasion. Larry then told her about the good news. His wife just smiled and congratulated him. She called on the maid to take care of the groceries while she and the rest of the family begin to eat supper.

As they were eating, Larry can’t help but see something in Marla’s eyes. Her eyes looks sad, he thought. It’s been like that ever since they were married. Even after they were married, both of them continued their studies although Marla had to put hers on hold to focus on her pregnancy where she gave birth to twins. Larry finished earlier but Marla was able to finish hers a semester after. they never had any marital arguments but Larry can still feel the awkwardness that they both feel with each other. Both of them have respectable jobs, he as a car company general manager and she, a realtor. Both of them shared responsibilities over their two kids, often bringing them to out-of-town trips and attending to school events together. But yet, he thought that something is still wrong and that he fears that this would grow into a large problem if they both ignore to face it.

One day, Larry told Marla and the twins that he’ll be gone for an overseas trip to Japan with representatives of the car company he works with to attend a seminar with of other car company representatives. He said he’ll be gone for at least three weeks, and to ensure of his return, he promised his kids on buying them toys made from japan and Japanese novels translated into English for his wife. The following day he left the Philippines and prayed that when he comes back, his family would welcome him with open arms. It didn’t.

Three weeks after, he came back with lots of presents that he would give for his twins and to his wife. He arrived at their house that night and with full glee, he opened the door and came looking for his wife and kids. He saw the maid crying, he thought something was wrong. He went upstairs and saw his kids, Yuichi and Karla, crying. The twins saw their father and ran toward Larry to hug him. He asked if there was something happened. Karla was too scared to tell so Yuichi told Larry the bad news: Marla just left the house.

Larry was shocked, surprised and can’t think what he would do next. He never thought he would see this coming so soon. they never fought, they never argue over anything, they honest with each other. “But was she?”, he said to himself. Was his wife dishonest all this time. What was the reason why she left him, and their twins. What can he do to fix this? Is this the start of their marriage’s total collapse?

    To be continued…

*How did you meet 7?

*Where does 18 live?
Sa may isang subdivision (?) malapit sa Great Falls St, Falls Church VA

*What is the best thing about 4?

Naimbag Nga Aldaw [mula sa Ilocos] (Good Day from Ilocos)

Wow! What a great week of staying in Ilocos and taking a break from doing laundry! Since I was already in Ilocos Norte, what better way to spend it but to write and record all the Ilocano terms i see there. Most of the terms below are actually campiagn messages from politicians runing for the midterm elections next week. The only ones I really understand are the terms “Ibotos/Ibutos/Ilayon Tayo!” (Iboto Natin/Let’s Vote) and Annak Ti Batac (Anak ng Batac/Child of Batac). Ilocos has a totally different culture as compared here in Manila. But I tell you all about on my next blog entry.

here they are:
Rangay ti Sangkailan
Ilayon a vocal
Taklin dagiti pada nga nakurapay
Isubli tayo ti napudno a panagserbi
Pudno a Gayyem
Dios ti Angnganen
Dios to kumugay
Magsidalus iti arusbayan kaya
Maayat ken napudno nga agserbi
Ilayon tayo
Annak ti Batac
Ibutos tayo
Isubli tayo ti napudno a panagserbi
Namnama ti masakbayan

J-University Adventures: Writers’ Workshop sa GMU times 2 Part 1(US Series)

Last February 2002, a Saturday, i was invited by the guys of George Mason University to go to the Fairfax City campus (ang main campus nila) for a writers’ workshop.

I was really surprised to know that, for having staying in a country that is pre-dominantly English-speaking, they’ll invite a foreigner like me to go attend a workshop in one of the state of Virginia’s most respectable and top most universities.

But even before the actual day had happend, tragedy strucked. It was early during the morning that our phone rang. my sister (who was sleeping at the sofa while Kuya and I are sleeping at the floor and Jorge was lseeping somewhere else in our one-bedroom-one bathroom apartment) answered it and it was a long-distance call from the Philippines.
It was one of our relatives from the Habitan clan, Ate’s face looks astonished and seems ike she was deeply shocked.

I can’t really tell but the moment that she hanged up the phone, she was crying. Since i was the one who was already awoken from the phone’s ringing, she came close to me and told me the bad news. “James…..Patay na si Lolo Peter….. (James, Lolo Peter is gone)”. I was shocked bt i cant express how i felt that time. my only reaction was “Ha? Talaga?”

After that i went asleep that night and the next thing i knew, i have to wake up to get myself ready to go to GMU. Mom was away so family friend, Tita Santi came along with Ate Jade to chaperon me on my way to George Mason.

Around 8 in the morning, we went out, bringing along with me a letter i received from the university. Out from the apartment complex of the Villages and the Paviloin, went straight ahead to the West Falls Church/UVA-GMU Metro train station. We took the the ride going to the end of the Virginia orange line which is the METRO station of Vienna-Fairfax/GMU. It is called as such since the place is within the jurisdiction of the City of Fairfax and it is a few kilometers away from neighboring Vienna (the Virginia town and not the Austrian capital).

Outside, there’s a nearby bus stop of the Metro Bus with a  complete listing of its scheduled stops (how come Manila doesnt have this things). Unlike the polluted and oldie second-hand buses we have here in Manila, the Metro buses are small yet very comfortable vehicles. There is order, it doesnt stop whenever it wants or whenever the passngers want. It follows the code of bus ethics, it never full itself up and the drivers there are actually friendly.

Anyway, since the trip is unpredictable long, we have top stand by if ever the bus we’re riding on will stop at the nearest GMU bus stop.

And it did. at around 9.30 am, we went around inside the GMu campus and was amazed at how it loks like. Maybe, excluding UP Manila, it is my first time being inside a university, or better yet, an American University.

We were able to find my building and i was now attending the workshop. While undergoing the workshop, i happend to bump into one of my classmates in 5th grade. He’s a Spaniard named Gonzalo Ortiz-Cacha and his dad works in the World Bank which where my mom was snet to work for two years.

As i was saying back in the whole writer’s workshop thingy, the coordinator had us let in on all things about famous literary works through sets of activities. one particular activity i still recall is that the oordinator made us be like the writer of the Sir Sherlock Holmes book series, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. She wants us to create a sotry based on he set of pictures she had for us to see.

Of course, i had one of my most embarrassing moments there. In one activity, the coordinator played some really sad music and she encouraged us to think hard to make a story with a tragic theme. I wnet beyond what was upposed to do and unconciously made a drawing of myself during the time the bad news strucked us earlier that day. the coordinator was dissapppointed and had me do it all over again. i wish it wouldnt be happen again.

Now that the workshop was over, i had more time to look around GMU. the university was named aftrt one of the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution. it was really big so we didnt really have time to explore the whole campus.

Now that we still had more hours of daylight left, we tok tthe oppurtunity to go eat lunch on a fairfax resto. I saw a Chuckie Cheese Amusement park and restaurant nearby but we didnt have that much money so we settled on dining out on a Turkish restaurant which was being run (and i hope it still is) by Turks from Turkey.
and because i was very much overwhelmed but my GMU experience, i was able to recognized the place.

And i was able to put thatin good use when, in a very unexpected delivery, i received from the mailbox that i was invited again to attend another writers’ workshop once again in GMU. ill be telling you all of it on part two of J-University Adventures: Writers’ Workshop sa GMU times 2 (US Series)
